Positron Emission
Tomography (PET Fusion)
What is a PET scan?
PET is an acronym for Positive Emission Tomography.
PET is an imaging test that is used to obtain important
and unique information about the function of organs and cells
within the body.
What is the difference between PET scans and other images such as CAT scan and MRI?
PET scans produce images of metabolism rather than parts of the bodys physical structure.
How does a PET scan work?
A very small,
short-lived amount of radioactivity is introduced to the body. The
scanner detects the location of the radiation in the
body. A computer creates a picture of the activity using
colors to highlight various functions.
PET scans can diagnose cancers,
heart disease, and many other illnesses, especially brain tumors in children.
