Patient Procedure Preparations

As prescribed by your referring physician

MRI
No preparation required. For your comfort you may wish to wear a sweat suit without metal closures.

CT Scanning
DO NOT EAT OR DRINK for 4 hours before exam

Mammography
Do not use powders, deodorant or perfume on the day of your test. These products contain substances that show up on X – ray film and can cause an unsatisfactory exam. Please bring the most recent mammogram if done at another facility.

Nuclear Medicine

Hepatobiliary Scan:
DO NOT EAT OR DRINK for 4 hours before exam.

Bone Scan:
Initially, you will be given an injection, after which you may leave for a 2 hour period and then return for the remainder of your study.

Thyroid Uptake Scan:
You will probably need to be off thyroid medication for a period of 4 – 8 weeks prior to your test. However, BEFORE discontinuing any medication, please check with you physician.

FDG Tumor Localization:
DO NOT EAT OR DRINK anything except water and medication for 15 hours. ABSOLUTELY NO SUGAR.

PET Scan:
Plan not to eat 6 hours prior to your exam.This will be verified by staff when your appointment is scheduled. Verify all of your medications with your physician.

Ultrasound Studies:

Abdomen, Aorta, Renal:

DO NOT EAT OR DRINK anything after midnight of the evening prior to the exam.

Obstetric,Pelvic:

Drink 4 large glasses of water 1 hour prior to exam time. Do not urinate until after the exam. Pediatric patients should drink 12 ounces of water one half hour prior to exam.

Abdomen & Pelvic Sono Sheduled same day:

DO NOT EAT 4 hours before exam and drink 4 large glasses of water 1 hour prior to exam time. DO NOT URINATE until after the exam.


Fluoroscopy / Abdomen

Esophogram, Upper GI, Upper GI & Small Bowel, Small Bowel only:

DO NOT EAT, DRINK, OR SMOKE after midnight of the night before your exam.

Barium Enema, IVP, Voiding Cystogram:

Begin clear liquid diet at 12:00 noon the day before your exam and drink one bottle of Magnesium Citrate. At 6:00pm that same day,drink another bottle of Magnesium Citrate and take 2 Dulcolax tablets. At 10:00pm the evening before your test, take 2 more dulcolax tablets. Try to drink one eight ounce glass of water each hour from noon to bedtime. Verify this protocol with your physician.
